Why Cleaning Your Electric Bike Matters:
Electric bikes are advanced technology, and proper maintenance ensures they continue to perform at their best. Regular careful cleaning not only extends the lifespan of your e-bike but also contributes to a smooth and efficient riding experience.
For Routine and Minor Cleaning:
We recommend using a waterless e-bike wash, give the bottle a good shake, then simply spray on and gently wipe off with a soft microfibre cloth. Use another clean microfibre cloth to buff back to a shine. We use and stock in-store the Muc-Off range of cleaning products, including Muc-Off Waterless Wash, which is a great product for this.
For More Thorough Cleaning:
Before we get started, gather these essentials:
- Bike-specific Cleaner - we recommend and stock Muc-Off Nano Tech Bike Cleaner
- Soft-bristle BrushChain Cleaner
- Citrus Degreaser
- Microfibre or Soft Cotton Cloths
- Water
- Chain Lubricant - we recommend and stock Muc-Off Wet & Dry Lubes
- Ebike Cleaning Stand (to lift the rear wheel up so drive train can be pedalled forwards) – we recommend and stock the Topeak Tune Up Stand X
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide:
Pre-Rinse:
Give your e-bike a gentle low pressure pre-rinse with plain water to remove loose dirt and debris. This prevents scratching the paint when you start scrubbing, being careful to avoid spraying water directly into any electrical components.
Cleaning:
Give your foaming bike wash bottle a good shake, then spray all over your e-bike, leave it for a minute or so to start to work, then agitate with a soft brush to break down the dirt, paying extra attention to any areas of stubborn muck. Then give your e-bike a rinse off, again with a gentle low pressure spray of plain water.
Wheels and Tyres:
Clean the wheels and tyres thoroughly. Check for embedded debris, and ensure the tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure.
Care for Electric Components:
Use a damp cloth to clean the electric components, such as the battery and motor. Avoid spraying water directly on these parts.
If your electric bike has a display or control unit, use a damp cloth to clean it. Avoid excessive moisture on the screen.
Chain and Drivetrain:
Carefully clean the chain and drivetrain ideally using a citrus based degreaser, chain cleaner and brush. Rinse off and wipe off excess water with a cloth, before re-apply your preferred chain lubricant.
Drying Time:
Allow your e-bike to air-dry in the shade or use a soft cloth to gently dry it. Pay attention to hard-to-reach areas, ensuring no water remains trapped.
Post-Cleaning Inspection:
Conduct a post-cleaning inspection. Check for any loose bolts, damaged parts, or signs of wear that may need attention.
Conclusion:
Regular cleaning not only enhances the appearance of your electric bike but also contributes to its longevity and performance. Make cleaning your e-bike a routine part of your maintenance schedule to ensure more fun rides ahead.
